Kenya, Thailand Explore Trade Opportunities Ahead of 60th Anniversary
Kenya and Thailand are exploring ways to expand trade and investment, strengthen agricultural cooperation and broaden technical exchanges as they prepare to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations in July 2027.
The discussions between Ambassador Josphat K. Maikara and Thailand’s Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Ms. Jirusaya Birananda, focused on opportunities to deepen economic engagement, improve market access and advance cooperation in areas of shared interest.
Air connectivity emerged as one avenue for strengthening commercial ties, with the two sides discussing the possibility of introducing direct cargo flights between Kenya and Thailand. The proposal could facilitate the movement of goods and complement existing passenger links between Nairobi and Bangkok, although further discussions would be needed before it could be pursued.
The meeting also explored potential Thai investment in Kenya’s infrastructure, including airports, seaports and roads. While no specific investment commitments were announced, the discussions identified infrastructure as a possible area for expanded economic engagement.
Agricultural cooperation featured prominently, particularly smart farming, food security, water harvesting and irrigation. These areas present opportunities to explore technical exchanges and knowledge-sharing aimed at improving agricultural productivity and water management.
On education, Ambassador Maikara proposed further discussions on opportunities for Kenyan English-language teachers to work in Thailand. Any such initiative would require consultations between the relevant authorities.
The talks also looked ahead to the July 2027 anniversary, offering an opportunity for both countries to build on six decades of diplomatic relations by advancing practical cooperation in trade, investment and technical exchanges.
Human trafficking and deceptive overseas employment offers were also discussed, highlighting the importance of protecting Kenyans from exploitation. The Thai side outlined screening procedures intended to facilitate legitimate travel while identifying suspicious documentation and potential fraud.
The discussions underscored the importance of document verification and cooperation among relevant authorities in addressing fraudulent recruitment and trafficking-related risks.
