Kenya Model United Nations Marks 25th Anniversary with Focus on Governance, Technology, and Youth Leadership

The Kenya Model United Nations (KMUN) launched its 25th anniversary conference at the Kenya School of Government, marking a major milestone in promoting youth diplomacy and leadership. The three-day event brings together students from across the country to participate in simulations of key UN bodies, including the United Nations General Assembly, United Nations Security Council, International Court of Justice, and International Law Commission, providing hands-on experience in global governance and diplomacy.

Simon Muriithi Kimuhu, Secretary-General of KMUN Kenya, described the platform as a nationally recognized, student-led movement that empowers young people to actively engage with and shape the world. With over 30 university chapters, KMUN has grown from dialogue-focused initiatives to impactful engagement on national and global policy issues.

Held under the theme “Elevating Action: Building Beyond” and co-hosted with the State Department for Foreign Affairs, the conference encourages youth to move beyond discussion and take concrete action toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The event was officially opened by Mr. Oscar Otieno, Senior Deputy Data Commissioner, on behalf of Ms. Immaculate Kassait, Data Commissioner, Office of the Data Protection Commissioner. He highlighted the critical role of data governance and ethical innovation in shaping Kenya’s digital future, noting that data has become a strategic resource influencing economic growth, public services, and democratic participation. He emphasized the need for human-centered, transparent, and rights-based digital policies, referencing frameworks from the African Union and Kenya’s Data Protection Act as key guides for safeguarding privacy and promoting trust. Mr. Otieno also underscored the importance of youth leadership in driving ethical digital transformation.

H.E. Henriette Geiger, European Union Ambassador to Kenya, called for renewed commitment to multilateralism and youth leadership amid global uncertainty. She highlighted the need for urgent reforms in the United Nations to maintain a rules-based international order, particularly in light of declining confidence among Global South nations. The Ambassador stressed that while global institutions must evolve to remain effective, their preservation is essential to preventing a shift toward power-driven geopolitics. She cited both the European Union and Kenya as key defenders of multilateralism and encouraged young people to contribute fresh ideas to shape the future of global governance.

The address also underscored the transformative potential and associated risks of artificial intelligence and data governance, including data misuse and inequality. Strengthened EU–Kenya cooperation in digital policy, innovation, and data protection was identified as a key priority, alongside a call for youth to actively engage in building inclusive, future-ready global systems.

Since its founding in 2001, KMUN has grown into a leading youth platform in Africa, reaching over 15,000 students and expanding to more than 30 university chapters. This year’s conference includes youth per-summits linked to major global events, such as the Africa France Summit scheduled to be hosted in Nairobi from 11th to 12th May 2026 and is expected to focus on climate change, environmental challenges, and financial system reform; the Global Trust Summit proposed to be held in Nairobi in June 2026, as well as side events including leadership forums, Global Village celebrations, and discussions on global challenges.

With participation from stakeholders like the European Union and Kenya’s Data Protection Commissioner, KMUN continues to position itself as a key driver in shaping globally minded, action-oriented young leaders.
