Amb. Gitonga is a career diplomat and currently the Secretary Foreign Service Administration and the Director, Diplomatic Privileges, Host Country Liaison Affairs & UNON Directorate at the Ministry. He has risen through the ranks from Third Secretary to Ambassador. Prior to that he garnered many years of experience in Provincial Administration and various ministries in Central Government.

During his tenure of service at the Ministry, he has served at the Kenya High Commission in Uganda and the Foreign Service Institute as Deputy Director. At Ambassadorial level, he has served as Director of the Americas Directorate; Deputy Ambassador at the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya & Permanent Mission to the UN in Austria and as Director of the East African Community (EAC) Directorate.

He has served on various boards including the National Irrigation Board, Ewaso Nyiro North and South Boards, the Kenya Roads Board and the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority Board.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in International Business.
